What Are Resin Driveways?

Resin driveway

Resin bound paving is a driveway surface made of solid chips and resin. It is permeable and resistant to cracking due to its flexibility. As they are low maintenance and available in a variety of styles, resin drives provide an excellent alternative to tarmac or block paving driveways. There are two different types of resin driveway:

Resin Bonded Driveways

This type involves laying resin on a sub-base, then scattering and pressing the aggregate into the resin layer until covered. This method has its drawbacks; and because the stones are exposed, they often become loose. This method is also non-permeable, meaning that alternative drainage solutions are required. However it is a little cheaper than resin-bound driveways.

Resin Bound Driveways

This method provides a smooth base and a permeable upper surface, which is especially important in the prevention of puddles, moss and lichen. Resin Bound Surfaces includes solid chips coated in polyurethane resin. These chips can be aggregate, plastic, marble, or other different types of material. Despite its slightly higher price point, this method is the most popular due to its durability and permeability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Resin drives that have been installed at a high standard and maintained properly will remain in excellent condition for a very long time. There are examples of resin driveways that were laid well over 12 years ago that look like they were installed yesterday.

Resin drives are a very low maintenance surface. There shouldn’t be weed/moss growth if the resin surface is kept clean. A pressure washer/hose can work well, if the pressure is used carefully. Alternatively, you could use our driveway cleaning service, or our specialist driveway cleaning solution Activate.

As the resin is mixed with aggregate stone and smoothed over when laid, it is no more slippery than any other surface.  However, despite its rough texture, we do advise to take extra care in icy conditions.

Our resin bound driveways are fully permeable to air and water. With full excavation, the driveways become Sustainable Urban Drainage system [SUDs] compliant. This means that a hard landscape can be created without the need for planning permission.

Our service includes a survey to ensure that the base material is suitable, so that you will not find cracks in your resin driveway. We also use UV stable resin, to avoid driveways fading in colour.
